Ebury Self has bought rights to a new book on reframing life’s biggest challenges by psychotherapist Phil Stutz.
Publishing director Olivia Morris acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for Lessons for Living from Karolina Sutton on behalf of Jennifer Joel at CAA. Vermilion will publish in hardback in November 2023 alongside Random House US.
The blurb reads: “Bestselling co-author of The Tools [Vermilion] and subject of the Netflix documentary ‘Stutz’, Phil Stutz’s Lessons For Living: What Only Adversity Can Teach Us is a collection of profound essays that cut through the messiness of life to help you get the good from the bad, each dealing with one of the big issues we all face – love and loss, success and failure, hope and regret, among others.”
Stutz’s previous book, The Tools, was a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller following the release of the Stutz Netflix documentary in December 2022, and had endorsements from Gwyneth Paltrow and Drew Barrymore.
Stutz studied at New York University. He worked as a prison psychiatrist at the Rikers Island jail complex and then in private practice in New York before moving his practice to Los Angeles in 1982, where his client list includes many writers, actors, producers and c.e.o.s.
Morris said: “We’re thrilled to be continuing our publishing relationship with Phil Stutz following the success of The Tools. This is a special and empowering book that distils the insight Phil has accrued during his extraordinary career as one of the world’s most in-demand therapists, and puts the invaluable conclusions he’s reached at readers’ fingertips.”
Sutton said: “This is a life-changing book, a philosophy for living based on values and meaning. I cannot wait for Ebury to share it with a huge new readership.”
