Ebury Edge has signed Dan Carter’s The Art of Winning: Lessons in Leadership, Purpose and Potential, for publication this summer.
Deputy publisher Drummond Moir acquired world rights alongside Claire Murdoch at PRH New Zealand from Dean Hegan at Halosport. The Art of Winning will be published on 20th July 2023 in hardback, e-book, audio and trade paperback. French rights have been sold to Hachette Marabout.
In the book, Carter, who played for New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks, distils his two decades at the frontiers of high-performance into his "perfect 10" lessons on leadership, purpose and potential, the publisher says, revealing why great leaders are made, not born, and why they must constantly evolve.
Its synopsis adds: “Dan also shares insights from conversations with those who have inspired his own leadership journey, including LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Saatchi & Saatchi c.e.o. Kevin Roberts and legendary All Blacks mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka. He shows how to forge a winning team culture, on and off the field, and shares proven repurposing tools to help you adapt to any situation or navigate any change.”
Carter said: “In this book, I take readers inside a journey that has forced me to look inwardly in a way I’ve never had to before. It’s been challenging, frustrating, rewarding and left me full of gratitude. Whether you’re a business looking to work on your culture, a leader on a steep learning curve, a person navigating change in their life or just someone of any age trying to get that little bit better every day, I hope that my experience, distilled here into 10 lessons, can spur you on to greater heights.”
Moir said: “A handful of living icons transcend their discipline by redefining what it is to be a master. Golf has Tiger Woods, tennis has Federer, football has Messi, and rugby has Dan Carter, widely felt to be the greatest player of all time. We’re thrilled to be publishing his unique perspective on high-performance, both one of the most inspiring and most candid leadership books I’ve ever read. Dan is nothing if not humble, and shows that high-performance doesn’t free you from doubt and pressure – it makes you live with it.”
During his 20-year career Carter broke several world records and scored the winning points in the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, earning him his third World Rugby Player of the Year Award and a second consecutive World Cup win for New Zealand. He is the most-capped All Blacks fly-half and the highest point scorer in Super Rugby history. In 2021, he was invited to become the first ever leader in practice at the Oxford Foundry, the entrepreneurship institute founded at the university by Apple c.e.o. Tim Cook.
