Estelle Paranque’s new exploration of Anne Boleyn’s life "told through the prism of her complex relationship with the French court", Thorns, Lust and Glory: The Betrayal of Anne Boleyn, has been acquired by Ebury Press.
Robyn Drury, publishing director, acquired world all-languages rights in the title from Rachel Conway at Georgina Capel Associates. It will be published in May 2024.
Investigating the way that the English queen’s life was entangled with those of French rulers and diplomats, as well as wider European alliances, the publisher says the book shines new light on one of British history’s most compelling royal figures.
Drury said: “Estelle is such a passionate historian, and her vivid and compelling perspectives remind us that there are still many new things to be learned about some of the best-known figures in our history. I’m delighted to be working with Estelle on a second book, and very much looking forward to inviting readers into the dramatic world of the Tudor court that she conjures so brilliantly.”
Paranque, whose previous book, Blood, Fire and Gold, was published by Ebury Press in 2022, said: “As a Franco-British historian, I feel a deep curiosity about why Anne Boleyn continues to captivate the imaginations of both English and French audiences. Thorns, Lust, and Glory sheds light on this well-known story and the tragic demise of Anne Boleyn, but examines it from a unique French perspective.
"Delving into the individuals who influenced and supported her, only to ultimately disappoint her, the book seeks to unravel these complex relationships and shed light on some of the enduring mysteries of an era fraught with the profound consequences of passion and power.”
