Ebury’s Self hub has won the rights to a “ground-breaking” guide to healthy ageing by US-based longevity expert Ken Stern.
Editorial director Holly Whitaker acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for The Century Club from the Gillian Mackenzie Agency. The Century Club: Lessons from the Five Countries that Have Transformed Healthy Ageing will be published by Vermilion in spring 2025, alongside Public Affairs in the US.
In The Century Club, Stern relays the lessons of the top five winners in healthy longevity – Singapore, Spain, Japan, Italy and South Korea – the top rankers on the Healthy Longevity Index. “Their stories which are rooted in an individual and cultural perspective that views the last third of one’s life as an opportunity for growth, intergenerational interaction, purpose, optimism and respect – and backed by the latest science of ageing – offer us a personal and societal guide for how we all can better our lives as we grow older,” the publisher said.
Stern is the host of the "Century Lives" podcast from the Stanford Center on Longevity, which has received Signal Awards for Best Health and Wellness Podcast and Best Documentary Podcast. He is also the chair of the Longevity Project and the host of the Century Summit.
He said: “Longer life has been one of the greatest achievements of the last century and a half, but with longer life in many places has come more years in ill health. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In societies as disparate as Singapore, Italy, and Japan, public policies and changing social norms are helping older adults be more socially connected, more engaged in work and purposeful activity, and more integrated into a multi-generational community – all of which translates directly to healthy longevity. I am excited to be partnering with Vermilion to bring to life the lessons from complex urban societies such as South Korea and Spain, and what it can mean for individuals and communities worldwide.”
Whitaker said: “We’re thrilled to be publishing The Century Club next spring in the Ebury Self hub. We’ve seen an enormous appetite in the market for offerings on longevity, and Ken’s approach is a fresh new take on the topic – it’s a hopeful, realistic and science-backed model, packed with fascinating insights and practical takeaways that will no doubt help readers live longer and more purpose-driven, happy lives.”
