Elliott & Thompson has signed And Then What?: Inside Stories of 21st-Century Diplomacy, a geopolitical analysis from former European Union diplomat Catherine Ashton.
Director Olivia Bays acquired world rights directly from the author. It will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 2nd February 2023.
From 2009 to 2014, Ashton was the European Union’s first high representative for foreign affairs and security and the first female European Union commissioner for trade. And Then What? includes Ashton’s encounters with politicians such as Vladimir Putin, Hillary Clinton, Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron. She gives an insight into how modern diplomacy works, looking at the tools needed to address the challenges facing Europe and the world.
Bays said: "We are delighted to be publishing Catherine Ashton’s first book, which couldn’t be more timely. As the EU’s first foreign affairs chief, she led its response to major international events such as the Arab Spring and Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014. During a turbulent period she worked tirelessly to negotiate historic agreements such as that between Serbia and Kosovo, building a reputation among all parties as an honest broker. In And Then What?: Inside Stories of 21st-Century Diplomacy she takes us behind the scenes to share her extensive experience, encompassing both success and setbacks. Her book will be an invaluable aid to understanding the recent past and navigating an uncertain future."
