Elliott & Thompson has signed Matt Gaw’s "exploration of the power and beauty of British weather" In All Weathers.
Senior editor Pippa Crane acquired world rights directly from the author. The book will be published in hardback and e-book on 28th March 2024.
In All Weathers is a "timely and urgent reminder of the ways in which our weather patterns ae changing and how we can not only adapt to but embrace the elements".
The books charts Gaw’s walks in different weather across Britain to explore the science weather, its role in folklore and cultural history and its psychological impact.
Crane commented: "Matt Gaw’s beautifully written journey through rain, fog, ice and wind expertly weaves together science, nature and the human experience, encouraging us to go out and embrace the elements, and appreciate the beauty and transformation of the world around us, whatever the weather."
Gaw is a journalist, naturalist and English teacher who has previously written The Pull of the River: A Journey into the Wild and Watery Heart of Britain and Under the Stars: A Journey into Light, both published with Elliott & Thompson.
He said: "The culture of the UK, a place founded on wind-blown migration and the navigation of storm-whipped seas, is undoubtedly weather-soaked. Yet, it seems to me that it is also incredibly lopsided. While, for the great majority of the population, our livelihoods and day-to-day existence are now long-divorced from the practicalities of seed planting or the need for good visibility in Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, our weather is too often judged as simply good (sunny) or bad (anything else). To be happy, content, to have fun, we are told, is to be out in the sunshine."
