Europa Editions UK has acquired Carlota Gurt’s “incisive” and “visceral” debut Alone, originally published in Catalan as Sola.
Gianluca Catalano at Europa Editions bought UK and Commonwealth (non-exclusive Europe), excluding Canada, rights from Natàlia Berenguer Gamell at Asterisc Agents, who said “Gurt’s untamed narrative power cannot be explained, she has to be read.
“She is pure language, she is organic and animal, incisive, visceral, and at the same time very human yet with a touch of surrealism that makes her a unique voice. Rarely has the Catalan literary world experienced such a brilliant debut as that of Carlota Gurt.”
Alone, described by the publisher as “an intoxicating story of collapse and survival” made its debut at number four in the Catalan bestseller ranking on publication week and has since seen praise from major publications both in Catalunya and in Spain, where the book was published by Libros del Asteroide as a major lead. It will be published in the UK in April 2023.
Caro Parodi, sales and marketing manager at Europa editions, added: “It’s a particularly exciting time for Catalan writers, with so many original and powerful voices travelling across the borders. We’re particularly proud to be welcoming Carlota Gurt’s unforgettable debut novel to our list and look forward to bringing to English readers this immense tale exploring what being alone truly means and how it can stamp an indelible mark on us.”
