Peter Hain's anti-apartheid memoir optioned for film

Labour politician Peter Hain’s AD & WAL (Biteback Publishing) has been optioned for a feature film by Fifty One Productions.

AD & WAL is former MP and Cabinet minister Hain’s story of his parents’ anti-apartheid fight, published in 2014, described as "an account of a couple who did extraordinary things despite the odds".

Film rights were acquired by Fifty One Productions from Jonathan Sissons at Peters Fraser and Dunlop.

Iain Dale, m.d. of political publisher Biteback Publishing, said: “We were extremely proud to have published Peter Hain’s inspiring account of his extraordinary parents, Ad and Wal, and we are thrilled that their story will be brought to a wider audience.”

Andrea Moignard and Cheryl Ingram, directors of Fifty One Productions, said: “We are delighted to have acquired the film rights to Ad & Wal. This is such an inspirational story that we feel is important to tell and we are honoured to have the privilege of adapting it for the big screen."

Hain said: “My parents' were an ordinary couple who found themselves doing extraordinary things because of their values and sense of duty. At the beginning they reacted to the immorality of apartheid then found themselves targets of a police state, eventually forced to sacrifice everything for their principles. I'm proud their story will appear on screen.”
