Faber has snapped up The Secret Public: How LGBTQ Resistance Shaped Popular Culture (1955-1979) a "major" new book by journalist and broadcaster Jon Savage.
While at Faber, Lee Brackstone acquired world all-language rights, excluding North America, from Sally Holloway at Felicity Bryan Associates. Publishing director Hannah Knowles is now editor. The book will be published on 15th February 2024.
The Secret Public is a "monumental" history of the LGBTQ influence on popular culture looking at key moments in music and entertainment history between 1955 and 1979.
The synopsis continues: "The Secret Public is a searching examination of the fortitude and resilience of the gay community through the lens of popular music and culture; it reflects on the freedom found in divergence from the norm and reminds us of the need to be vigilant against those seeking to roll back the rights of marginalised groups."
Savage said: "I’m proud to be publishing The Secret Public in the 40th year of my association with Faber and Faber. It’s a big book: the culmination of a lifetime of experience, thought and research."
Knowles added: "Any new book by Jon Savage is a cause for celebration, and The Secret Public is further proof that his body of work is a keystone of sociocultural writing. His exploration of the impact of the LGBTQ community on pop culture between the 1950s and 1970s is simultaneously an exhilarating celebration and a necessary reminder of the oppression and vilification endured by LGBTQ people, both then and now."
