Fairlight Books has scooped The Mask of Merryvale Manor, the "atmospheric" debut novel from investigative journalist Pete Sherlock.
Assistant editor Sarah Shaw acquired worldwide rights, including audio, directly from the author. The novel is scheduled for publication in June 2024.
Set at the beginning of the 1960s, The Mask of Merryvale Manor follows Ben Butler when he is taken in by the Drummonds, his wealthy relatives at Merryvale Manor. When, five years after he arrives, the body of an old visitor is discovered on the estate the family begins to fall apart "under the haunting eyes of the Ooser, a centuries old demonic mask that overlooks the Drummond family home".
Sherlock said: "As a journalist of many years, I’m interested in what motivates people to make the choices they do and how unconscious choices often control our actions, and I was able to explore that with The Mask of Merryvale Manor. I’m excited to work with the Fairlight Books team and give my debut a home."
Shaw said: "I’m delighted that Fairlight Books will be publishing The Mask of Merryvale Manor. From the very first page I was completely engrossed by this tense literary mystery and the darkly dysfunctional Drummond family. Pete has established himself as a strong new talent in the genre, and we’re so glad to be sharing his incredible debut."
