Fairlight Books has swooped for The Old Haunts by Allan Radcliffe and The Two-Tailed Snake by Nod Ghosh.
Editor Laura Shanahan and assistant editor Sarah Shaw acquired world rights and audio directly from Radcliffe and Ghosh. Both novels will be published in September 2022.
The Old Haunts and The Two-Tailed Snake will expand Fairlight’s Moderns collection which launched in 2018. Other titles in the collection include Sophie van Llewyn’s Women’s Prize longlisted Bottled Good and Blue Postcards by Douglas Bruton, longlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction 2022.
Radcliffe’s début novella The Old Haunts is a "wistful" coming-of-age story following bereaved Jamie and his boyfriend Alex set on a rural steading in Scotland.
Ghosh’s The Two-Tailed Snake is set in 1940s India against pre-Partition unrest. The publisher continued: "Tensions are rising, but 14-year-old Joya doesn’t pay much attention to ‘political business’ – until the day her father disappears without a trace. Forced to drop out of school and support her mother by working in a garment factory, Joya begins to question who and what is really behind her father’s sudden departure."
Publisher Louise Boland said: "We are so happy to expand our Fairlight Moderns series with the
addition of these two titles. Allan and Nod have written extraordinary stories, each with a strong
sense of place and stirring themes – we can’t wait to share them with our readers."
