Fig Tree has netted a collection of Dolly Alderton’s Sunday Times Style agony aunt columns.
Helen Garnons-Williams, publishing director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to Dear Dolly from Clare Conville at Conville & Walsh. It will publish in October.
Alderton has shared her wisdom with readers since starting her column in 2020. Subjects include break-ups and body issues, families, friendships, dating, divorce, the pleasures and pitfalls of social media, sex, loneliness, longing, love and everything in between.
Fig Tree said: “Without judgement, and with deep empathy informed by her own, much-chronicled adventures in love, friendship and dating, Dolly leads her readers by the hand through the various labyrinths of life, proving that a problem shared is truly a problem halved.”
Garnons-Williams said: “We are delighted to have gathered together Dolly’s much-loved Sunday Times columns into this wonderful hug of a book. Whether she’s offering advice on how to survive heartbreak, or first – and sometimes last – dates, or how to navigate relationships with partners, parents, friends, and even pets… Dolly’s clear-eyed, compassionate and invaluable counsel is marinated in her own experience and seasoned with humour and warmth: all the elements that made her bestselling memoir and novel so special.”
Alderton added: “It was such a pleasure to revisit the Dear Dolly columns and put this collection together for a book that I hope will be a comfort and a companion. Advice columns and personal essay collections have always reassured me that I’m not alone in my experiences, and that’s all I’ve ever wanted my writing to do. As always, Fig Tree couldn’t be a better home for it.”
