Welsh small press Firefly has signed a “thoroughly modern” collection of Welsh myths and legends by Claire Fayers, aimed at eight to 12-year-olds. Welsh Giants, Ghosts and Goblins is slated for publication in August 2024.
Penny Thomas, publisher, acquired the world rights from Gemma Cooper at The Bent Agency UK.
The collection encompasses a mix of giant, ghost and goblin stories from all across Wales, adapted by Fayers and told through Idris the giant who collects stories on his adventure. Classic tales are woven in with modern reimaginings of folklore, and mythological creatures are given new stories.
Thomas said: “Claire has a talent for bringing to life the old tales, set in places we can still all visit today. Funny, scary and magical, this is a terrific new collection.”
Fayers grew up in South-East Wales with an obsession with myths and magic. Her previous books include The Accidental Pirates, Storm Hound (both Macmillan Children’s)and Tapper Watson and the Quest for the Nemo Machine (Firefly).
Fayers said: “I’m delighted to be working with the talented Firefly team again and I’ve had great fun hunting down and adapting these stories.”
