Children's independent Fisherton Press will publish We Love the NHS on July 5th 2020, the 72nd birthday of the NHS.
The book was written by Eleanor Levenson, publisher of Fisherton Press, and is illustrated by Marek Jagucki. The picture book is aimed at children ages three to eight.
After clapping for the NHS during the pandemic, Levenson asked her own children, aged four, seven and nine, if they knew what the NHS is and what it does. When her children weren't sure, the idea for the book came to her.
The book looks at different workers in the NHS, how it is funded, how it was established and why people might need it. The book seeks to show ethnic diversity throughout, in both patients and staff, as well as showing people with different abilities and illnesses.
Levenson added: "Marek, the illustrator, and I have worked incredibly quickly to get this book on the shelves within three months of coming up with the initial idea and we’re really proud of how it has turned out. We have also worked really hard to ensure We Love the NHS reflects the diversity of our society in terms of gender, race and disability, and while this shouldn’t be noticeable because it should just be normal in all books, we hope that booksellers, teachers and parents do see that this is the case."
For each copy sold, a donation will be made to the Children's Heart Surgery Fund at the Leeds Royal Infirmary.
