Fleet has snapped up a story of ’compulsion and obsession’ from debut author Kirsten King. Editorial director Rhiannon Smith acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to A Good Person and North American rights were pre-empted by Tarini Sipahimalani at Putnam. All rights were sold by Nicola Barr at The Bent Agency.
King works as a screenwriter and lives in LA and has written for Teen Vogue, BuzzFeed, The Huffington Post and more.
The synopsis reads: "A Good Person tells the story of Lillian, who is having a great time with Henry: he’s charming, well-educated, and exactly the kind of guy she’d like to end up with. That is, until she stays the night at his flat and they end up in a huge argument. Furious, Lillian decides to seek revenge on Henry by performing a drunken YouTube hex on him. But then Henry actually ends up dead."
The publisher described the books as a "twisting, enthralling tale", and said it is a book perfect for readers of Jen Beagin, Mona Awad and Eliza Clark."
Fleet will publish the novel in summer 2026.
King said: "I’m so thrilled to be publishing A Good Person with Fleet. Rhiannon has shown such passion and understanding for this novel and I can’t wait to share Lillian in all her messy glory with readers."
Smith said: "I was hooked from the very first pages of A Good Person, Kirsten has crafted a compulsive tale that readers are going to love. Lillian is a brilliant protagonist, sympathetic and problematic in turn—we’re all delighted to be bringing her wild story and Kirsten’s debut to the Fleet list."
