Fleet has signed two new titles from Yara Rodrigues Fowler author of Stubborn Archivist, and Sunday Times Young Writer Award shortlistee.
Editorial director Rhiannon Smith acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Imogen Pelham at Marjacq. There are more things will be published in April 2022 in print, e-book and audio.
Yara Rodrigues Fowler’s first book, Stubborn Archivist (Fleet), was published in 2019 to critical acclaim. It was longlisted for both the Dylan Thomas Prize and Desmond Elliott Prize.
There are more things was shortlisted as a work-in-progress for the Eccles Centre & Hay Festival Writer’s Award and received the Society of Authors’ John C Lawrence Award. It tells the story of Melissa and Catarina, charting their friendship and their pasts, set against the political tumult of modern-day Britain and Brazil.
Fleet said: “The novel melds real historical texts and events with fiction, including the story of two women revolutionaries traversing Brazil in the darkest days of the military dictatorship. there are more things is about family, those we are born with and those we create, of the bonds between women and of how history – both personal and political – can travel through the years, touching lives in unexpected ways.”
Fowler said: "I am so grateful for Rhiannon’s faith in me and her care for Melissa and Catarina. My hope has been to create a revolutionary novel. A book that traces our violent common history and revels in the unknowable beauty of our survival and our private moments. I have tried to write many small utopias, gesturing towards the possibility of a larger one too."
Smith added: “Stubborn Archivist was one of the most talked about books of 2019, and I’m delighted to continue to publish Yara and grow her career. In there are more things Yara has produced a novel of astounding maturity and depth – providing all the touchpoints that we so loved in her debut in a bigger, more ambitious work. Readers are going to love getting to know Melissa and Catarina and we’re all so excited at Fleet to be working with Yara on these new projects.”
