Formy Books falls for ‘enchanting’ fables from Ackie and McCarthy
Formy Books has secured Seedlings, a collection of nine fables by Curtis Ackie, illustrated by Brianna McCarthy.
Ebony Lyon, founder of Formy Books, and editor Lauren Ackie acquired world rights directly from the author. Seedlings will be published on 20th March 2022.
Seedlings weaves together Ackie’s West Indian and British background and their “unique perspective” as an autistic and non-binary parent of three into each fantastical tale.
The publisher wrote: “All nine neo-fables centre Black communities: from Nano’s journey to appeal to the heart of Tanté Adress in a desperate attempt to exact revenge against the ocean, to the tale of Uya, an old woman branded a witch, who must protect herself from the evil clutches of a greedy landowner.”
McCarthy’s “enchanting illustrations” accompany Ackie’s text and challenge the ways in which Black women’s bodies are portrayed.
