Fourth Estate has pre-empted the début novel by Jennette McCurdy in a two-book deal.
Katie Bowden, editorial director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein on behalf of Peter McGuigan at Ultra Literary in a “major” pre-empt. North American rights were sold to Sara Weiss at Ballantine in a seven-figure pre-empt.
The two-book deal includes an as-yet-untitled début novel and another work of non-fiction.
McCurdy’s memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died (Simon & Schuster) has sold more than 21,000 copes in hardback since becoming available in the UK, according to the publisher. It is an “inspiring story of resilience and independence” in which McCurdy tells in “unflinching” detail the story surrounding her rise to fame and her struggles as a child actor. She is currently developing a feature film that she will write and direct.
Bowden said: “Jennette McCurdy is one of the most exciting new voices in literature today, and her brilliant memoir has deservedly taken the world by storm. Jennette’s fiction is every bit as thrilling as her non-fiction. We are so incredibly proud to be welcoming Jennette to Fourth Estate and we can’t wait for everyone to discover this new work from an electrifying talent.”
