Gary Lineker and author Ivor Baddiel have written a middle-grade book about 50 game-changing football moments for Puffin.
Non-fiction commissioning editor Phoebe Jascourt signed world rights for 50 Times Football Changed the World from Andy May at Jon Holmes Media. The hardback gift book, out on 13th October 2022, will feature black and white illustrations by Erica Salcedo. E-book and audio versions will also be released.
The book is a collection championing 50 of the TV host’s “favourite, eye-opening, awe-inspiring and unforgettable football stories that have changed the game – and sometimes the world – forever”. It includes times when the beautiful game has united people against all the odds, pioneering players that have used their massive platforms for good, and young footballers from non-league teams across the world who teach lessons about inclusion, compassion and sportsmanship.
Lineker said: “For centuries, football has brought so much joy to so many, including myself, and I’m very pleased to be able to share these moments of joy with young football fans in this book. It’s been terrific fun looking back at such a wide-ranging collection of seismic soccer moments. Who knows, a certain tale from 2015/16 may get a mention…”
Throughout the book Lineker will be presenting “Game-Changer Awards” to people whose actions both on and off the pitch shook the world.
Jascourt said: “There really is no one better to write this book than football legend Gary Lineker. We’re so proud to be publishing this uplifting collection of stories by Gary and the brilliant Ivor Baddiel, which showcases the many times football has been a force for good. With stories about teams and players from across the world, plus Gary’s insight on how these moments inspired him throughout his career, this book will be a very special gift for young football fans everywhere.”
