HarperVoyager has acquired a "lavishly illustrated" history of the Targaryen family from George R R Martin’s bestselling series A Song of Ice and Fire.
Publishing directors Natasha Bardon and Jane Johnson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, for The Rise of the Dragon by Martin, Elio M García Jr and Linda Antonsson from Rachel Kind at Penguin Random House US. It will publish on 25th October 2022.
The book contains more than 180 new illustrations and covers the first half of the Targaryen dynasty, from Aegon the Conqueror through the regency of Aegon III Dragonsbane. The publisher said it is “the perfect companion” to Martin’s Fire & Blood as well as the upcoming TV series “House of the Dragon”.
Martin has sold 6.1 million books since 1998 and outside lockdown weeks via Nielsen BookScan in the UK for £50.4m. His 2019 illustrated book Fire and Blood (HarperVoyager) sold 151,166 copies for £2.1m.
