Granta Books has acquired Holly Pester's debut poetry collection Comic Timing, as part of its new Granta Poetry series.
Poetry editor Rachael Allen signed world rights for the collection directly from the author.
She said: "Comic Timing is a radical act of a book. Holly’s poems pay attention to the structures we are forced to live within, while toying with and undermining the seriousness that accompanies a critique. Her inimitable lines have the impact of philosophy; they move a reader through landscapes hosting marginal bodies, landlords, bog butter, desire, domestic and civic spaces, while navigating the gap between emotion and its material consequence through her entirely unique voice. With a beautifully performed naivety that corresponds with her deep intellect and knowledge of poetry, this collection is hugely original."
The collection takes its title from Pester’s long poem which was first published in Granta magazine, and was shortlisted for the 2019 Forward Prize for Best Single Poem.
The book is the third title in the new Granta Poetry series, which includes Rendang by Will Harris and Life Without Air by Daisy Lafarge.
Comic Timing will be published in spring next year.
