Granta snaps up prize-winning Danish writer's novel

Granta is to publish The Lobster's Shell by Danish writer Caroline Albertine Minor, her first work to have an English-language translation. 

Editorial director Anne Meadows acquired world English language rights to the novel from Laurence Laluyaux at Rogers, Coleridge and White. The book is not yet published in Denmark, but has been pre-empted in France and Germany at acquired at auction in Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. 

The novel explores "frayed family ties and voices from the afterlife", following three orphaned siblings over the course of five days as they confront their shared history. Minor was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize for Blessings, a collection of short stories and has won the 2018 PO Enquist Prize, the Danish Fiction Writers' Assoication Prize and the 2017 Michael Strunge Prize. Her work has also featured in Granta Magazine. 

Meadows said: "I have been following Caroline’s work for several years, ever since I stumbled across her intoxicating short story ‘Grief’s Garden’. Caroline has an incredible gift for building place and character with only a few deft stokes, and a gorgeous, pellucid prose style that repays close reading. I would follow her anywhere, and I am thrilled we’ll soon be able to introduce her work to British readers."

The Lobster's Shell will be published in summer 2022. The translator is yet to be confirmed.
