Guardian Faber has signed a “brilliantly lacerating” new collection from John Crace, the Guardian’s parliamentary sketch writer.
Associate publisher Laura Hassan acquired audio and world all-languages rights for Depraved New World: Please Hold, the Government Will Be With You Shortly directly from the author. The book will be published in November 2023.
The synopsis explains: "Taking in everything from Partygate, BoJo’s drawn-out farewell and the disastrous reign of Liz Truss, to the psychodrama of the Tory leadership contest(s), the return of Rishi Sunak and the shenanigans of his impressively inept colleagues, Depraved New World is a worryingly funny collection which captures British politics at its most absurd.”
Crace also writes the ‘Digested Week’ column for the Guardian and is the author of several books, most recently including A Farewell to Calm (Guardian Faber Publishing), Decline and Fail (Guardian Faber Publishing), and I, Maybot (Guardian Faber Publishing). He said: “I’m thrilled that Guardian Faber has chosen to publish my latest collection of political sketches.
"When I, Maybot came out six years ago, I had imagined it to be a one off, the nadir of post-Brexit Britain. Now I’m almost nostalgic for that period of stability and calm leadership, so please do join me for group therapy as we relive the most recent years of the ongoing Conservative psychodrama. Together we can get through it. Possibly.”
Mo Hafeez, commissioning editor for Guardian Faber, added: “John is a legend of British satire, and at a time of such political inanity and insanity we’ve needed his writing more than ever. It’s been a joy to work with him on this blisteringly funny whirlwind tour of post-Brexit Britain, and I can’t wait for readers to pick up a copy and dive in.”
