Guardian Faber has signed the first book from football podcast “the Guardian’s Football Weekly” entitled The Football Weekly Book.
Alex Bowler acquired world rights directly from the authors, with the book scheduled for publication on 28th September 2023. The publisher says it will contain “all the nonsense jokes, off-the-wall trivia and occasional insightful remarks that draw in millions of listeners to the podcast every month".
Edited by Jonathan Wilson, with Barry Glendenning and Max Rushden as consulting editors, the book will also feature contributions from: Barney Ronay, Jonathan Liew, Suzy Wrack, Nicky Bandini, David Squires, Jordan Jarrett-Bryan, Elis James, Nedum Onuoha and John Brewin.
Wilson, author, sports journalist and contributor to "Football Weekly", said: “Some of the pictures are lovely and I’m pretty sure there’s no blank pages. It’s an honour and a privilege to work with legends like Max and Barry, although not so much that I’d do it for free. Jake Humphrey may have beaten us to the punch by inventing the podcast, but we’ve just invented the book.”
Max Rushden, co-host of "Football Weekly", said: “Of all the books Jonathan Wilson has (mainly) written, this is the first one you’ll finish. Barry must have done something.”
Barry Glendenning, co-host of "Football Weekly", also commented: “Like each ’Football Weekly’ podcast we deliver, the creation of this weighty, modestly-priced tome was a labour of love but ultimately great fun to be involved with... If your idea of great fun involves ignoring increasingly irate WhatsApp messages, emails and phone calls from Jonathan Wilson, then arguing with Max Rushden over who should get top billing on the cover.”
