Guppy Books has signed Mexikid, a "hilarious" graphic novel memoir from Pedro Martín.
Publisher Bella Pearson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Alessandra Birch on behalf of Daniel Lazar at Writers House. The graphic novel will be published on 28th September 2023 accompanied with a "stand-out" marketing and PR campaign for the US release, with Dial Books, in August 2023.
Mexikid brings Martín’s online comic — Mexikid Stories — to the page, detailing a road trip the author-illustrator took in the 1970s with his family from California to Mexico to pick up his grandfather and bring him to America. Guppy Books says it’s a "hilarious yet moving coming-of-age story about family" for readers aged 10 and over.
Pearson commented: "I’ve been keen to publish a graphic novel since setting up Guppy in 2019 — and hadn’t found one I loved until... Mexikid! I can’t stop talking about this book — it is not only fascinating in terms of history but both laugh-out-loud and deeply moving, telling the story of a boy slowly beginning to understand the adult world around him. Pedro’s artwork is exquisite, full of humour, and just like real life, the story heads off in all sorts of unexpected directions. This is a book for all ages and I’m absolutely thrilled to be publishing it this year.”
Martín said: "¡Hola, mi gente bonita! I’m super excited that Mexikid has found a home in the UK. I can’t wait for everyone to read it!"
