Octopus imprint Endeavour has acquired Brazen: My Unorthodox Journey from Long Sleeves to Lingerie, the memoir of Julia Haart’s escape from one of the strictest sects of orthodox Judaism to become one of the most influential figures in fashion.
This week also sees the worldwide release of a Netflix series following Haart’s life in fashion as the c.e.o. of Elite World Group, the parent company of a group of top modelling agencies, called “My Unorthodox Life”.
Claudia Connal, publishing director of Endeavour, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Meredith Miller and Byrd Leavell at United Talent Agency. Brazen will be published by Endeavour in March 2022 retailing at £14.99 in hardback and will also be available as audiobook and e-book.
“Ever since she was a child, every aspect of Julia’s life – what she thought, ate, and wore – was controlled by the strict rules of her community,” Endeavour said. “In Brazen, Julia shares her story of growing up caring for her seven younger siblings, and then at 19 being married off to a man she barely knew. For the next 23 years, her husband would rule her life.”
“When her youngest daughter, Miriam, started to question why she wasn't allowed to sing, run, or ride a bike, Julia reached breaking point. She knew that if she didn't find a way to leave, her daughters would be forced into the same unending servitude.”
Haart began leading a double life which led to her rising to the top of the fashion industry. “When no one was looking, she'd sneak looks at fashion magazines and sketch designs for the clothes she dreamed about wearing in the world beyond her orthodox suburb,” Endeavour said. “In the ultra-orthodox world, clothing has one purpose: to cover the body from head to toe. Giving any thought to your appearance beyond that is considered sinful, an affront to God. She started clandestinely selling life insurance to save her 'freedom' money. At 42, she finally mustered the courage to leave.”
“Within a week of leaving her old life behind, Julia started a shoe brand and within nine months she was in Paris for fashion week. A year later, she became creative director of La Perla, the world-leading lingerie brand. And now, she is the co-owner and c.e.o. of Elite World Group, and one of the most powerful people in the fashion industry.”
Connal said: “Brazen is an extraordinary account of Julia’s brave decision to choose her own path in life, leaving behind the harsh restrictions that governed her for 42 years. This is an incredible story that gives us a window into two very different worlds. Compellingly told, Brazen is a propulsive and unforgettable read that will leave you hungry for more.”
Haart commented: “I am honored to finally share my story with the world. Brazen is a story about my unorthodox, unconventional and brave journey from a life I knew I wasn’t meant to live to a life I had always dreamt of living. Sharing my story is something I have known I needed to do for many years. It is my dream and goal, that someone, somewhere, will read my story and be inspired to change something they’re unhappy with in their own life, whatever that may be.
"If my story gives just one person the confidence they need to walk away from something they know isn’t right and chase their dreams, well that makes this all worth it.”
