Hachette Children’s Group has landed Honor Cargill-Martin and illustrator Jaimee Andrews’ “bold and vibrant take on history” in The Six Queens of Henry VIII.
Lucy Twist, editor for colour non-fiction, acquired world rights for the text from Clare Wallace at Darley Anderson Children’s Book Agency. World rights for the illustrations were acquired by Ella Tomkins, design manager for colour non-fiction, directly from Andrews. The book will be published in hardback on the colour non-fiction list in October 2024 for children aged nine to 12 years old.
“From rumours of scandals to political plays and fabulous frocks, this is a story filled with ambition, treason and strong women,” said Twist. “Jaimee Andrews’ bright illustrations with graphic elements are the perfect accompaniment.”
Cargill-Martin said: “Henry’s six queens are some of the best-known names in British history and yet they’re so often reduced to nothing more than their relationships and their deaths. Each one of these women had to fight hard for her place in history; I’m so grateful to have been given an opportunity to centre their remarkable stories here and to see them brought to such sparkling life by Jaimee!”
Andrews added: “It’s been a fabulous experience delving into the queens’ worlds, and having the opportunity to illustrate their individual stories. This book will allow readers to explore the lives of the six queens, and learn more of their complex characters.”
