Hachette Children’s Group has swooped for a "colourful and hilarious" graphic novel series from author-illustrator Dave Roman, beginning with Unicorn Boy.
Rachel Wade, editorial director for fiction, and Jadene Squires, assistant editor, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in a three-book deal from Kristin Dulaney at Macmillan US. Unicorn Boy, for readers aged between seven and 11, will be published on 14th March 2024.
Pitched for fans of Jamie Smart’s Bunny vs Monkey series (David Fickling), Unicorn Boy follows Brian, a shy child who sprouts a unicorn horn and must use his newfound powers to help save his best friend who has been kidnapped by shadowy creatures from another realm.
Wade commented: "I was blown away by Unicorn Boy – Dave Roman has created one of the most action-packed, heart-warming and hilarious graphic novels I’ve seen for a long time, with standout illustrations, a brilliantly crafted story and naturally inclusive characters children will love. This is the perfect addition to our bestselling graphic novels list at Hachette Children’s Group."
Roman added: "I hope people can tell how much fun I had drawing Unicorn Boy and that some of those laughs rub off in the ink. Unicorn Boy is for anyone who has ever felt different on the inside… and/or the outside. You don’t have to be a mythological creature to enjoy the book. But it doesn’t hurt!"
