HarperCollins has acquired world English rights to a memoir by Caroline Litman about her trans daughter Alice, who died in 2022.
Mudlark commissioning editor, Imogen Gordon Clark, struck the deal with Antony Topping of Greene & Heaton.
Her Name is Alice will be published in hardback, ebook and audiobook on 13th March 2025.
Alice Litman died by suicide aged 20, having waited almost three years for her first appointment at a gender identity clinic.
Her mother’s book captures the realities of navigating both her daughter’s transition and the painful days, weeks and months after Alice’s death.
Litman said: “People often ask me if writing the book has been cathartic, as if writing it all down somehow makes things better, makes my grief smaller. If only writing a book could do that—how simple grief would be. It felt quite simple really, writing the book. It was my story and Alice’s, and here was my chance to tell it, without judgement or indifference. It helped me live each day with a little hope. And hope is what I cling to, that things might change for the better—they must. May this book pave the way.”
She added: “We can never bring Alice back, but we will keep campaigning to ensure all trans people are able to live in dignity and receive the healthcare they need and deserve.”
Gordon Clark said: “Her Name is Alice is one of the most important and breathtaking books I’ll ever get to read, let alone the honour to publish. As debates on gender healthcare continue, here is a unique chance to witness the very real impact on a young trans woman and her family. Caroline is a phenomenally talented, brave and honest writer, and I’m so proud to help share her—and Alice’s—essential story.”
