HarperCollins Children’s Books (HCCB) has bought two middle-grade novels by début author Olivia Wakeford.
The first, My Dog, is described as “a heartwarming tale of love, loss and friendship” set for publication in paperback in March 2025. It will be illustrated by David Litchfield.
World rights including translation were acquired by Megan Reid, commissioning editor, from Joanna Moult at Skylark Literary.
My Dog tells the story of the special friendship between 10-year-old Rhys and a lost black Labrador called Worthington. Rhys soon discovers that looking after a dog in secret is anything but easy and he knows that before long he’ll have to confront his fears and find a way to tell his dad about Worthington.
Wakeford said: “I’m still pinching myself that My Dog has found a home at HarperCollins Children’s Books. Working with Megan and the whole team has been the most incredible experience, and to see David bring my characters to life so beautifully has brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion! This is a hugely personal story, so to know it’s going to be out in the world is both exciting and terrifying, but I believe books – especially children’s books – are such a powerful tool in helping explore feelings and developing empathy. I hope young readers will find as much comfort reading about Rhys and Worthington, as I found in writing about them.”
Reid added: “Phenomenally moving and beautifully written, My Dog is the story of an extraordinary friendship between a boy and his dog, and a gorgeous exploration of grief, friendship, hope and love. Black Labrador Worthington is completely irresistible and I can’t wait for young readers to meet him! Olivia is a remarkable new talent in children’s fiction and My Dog will completely break your heart, before mending it again.”
Wakeford graduated with distinction from the MA in Writing for Children at Bath Spa University in 2022.
