HarperCollins Children’s Books has unveiled David Walliams’ latest book, Robodog, which will publish in spring.
Illustrated by Adam Stower and scheduled to be published on 30th March in hardback, with simultaneous e-book and audio editions, Robodog is set in the city of Bedlam—home to a host of wicked villains—and described as an “action-packed comic caper” which introduces the Police Dog School’s newest recruit and future of crime fighting: Robodog. But can he stop the most feared duo in Bedlam, and their evil plans to ruin the city?
The publisher’s synopsis goes on: “Packed with unlikely heroes, despicable baddies and a comedic cast of characters including an ice queen, a giant worm and a dastardly collective of cats, this latest Walliams adventure is supercharged family fun.”
Cally Poplak, executive publisher, said: “Hot off the heels of securing the bestselling children’s book of 2022 we couldn’t be more excited to publish David Walliams’ next adventure. David’s books bring joy and laughter to children and parents around the globe."
Nick Lake, fiction publisher, described the book as “another feat of imagination from David Walliams, showcasing yet again his extraordinary storytelling talent".
“Drawing on the golden age of comic books as well as classic children’s literature, and infused with David’s love of cinema, this is a non-stop, laugh-out-loud comic adventure that, like all of David’s novels, is also full of heart. Gloriously illustrated by the versatile Adam Stower, who brings his own deep love of film and comics to the world of Bedlam, it will be the perfect tonic for families everywhere this Easter and beyond,” he said.
Walliams said Pinocchio was one of his favourite stories growing up, and that he wanted to create his own version with a robot police dog who yearned to be a real dog. “It is a comedy adventure story with a group of supervillains, but I hope my readers will find a positive message in there about being whoever you want to be,” he said.
Stower added: “Illustrating Robodog has been an absolute treat. The story is set in the city of Bedlam and is populated by a vast array of fantastic characters, from heroes to supervillains, police dogs to conniving cats. There are gadgets aplenty too. It is a feast for the imagination, packed with action, laughs and plenty of heart.”
