HarperCollins Children’s Books has scooped two young middle-grade books from Sally Gardner and illustrator Chris Mould.
Editorial director Tom Bonnick acquired world rights for the text from Catherine Clarke at Felicity Bryan Associates and world rights for the illustrations from Penny Holroyde at Holroyde Cartey in an exclusive submission. Pernickety Boo, the first book in the deal, will be published in a "beautiful" hardback gift format in September 2024 with the sequel following in September 2025.
Pernickety Boo is an "unforgettable, magical" story following a umbrella which is brought to life by a careless sorcerer. With "heart, humour [and] imagination", and black and white illustrations throughout, this is a book for the whole family, the publisher says.
Gardner commented: "I am excited about Pernickety Boo – I’ve had such fun writing it and been most fortunate to have Tom Bonnick as my editor and to have the wonderful artist Chris Mould doing the illustrations. I can’t wait for it to be published.”
"It’s always a real pleasure and a pleasant surprise to find yourself working with someone you’ve admired from a distance over the years," said Mould. "I know Sally’s work well and could not miss the opportunity to join forces with her on a fun and quirky adventure that has set my creative brain whirring."
Bonnick added: “From the moment Sally first described Pernickety Boo too me, I was – just like Pernickety – completely spellbound. No one other than Sally could have told this story (or written a book from the point of view of an umbrella!) – it has the assuredness and bold originality of a writer working at the height of their powers. And I am happy that the book will be illustrated by Chris, whose work combines exquisite draftsmanship with a one-of-a-kind style that is the perfect match for Sally’s singular voice."
