HarperCollins Children’s Books and Dr Seuss Enterprises will publish a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas, marking the first time that the original narrative has been expanded on.
World English language rights. excluding Canada, the US, its dependencies and the Philippines, for the new title – How The Grinch Lost Christmas – were acquired by Juliet Matthews, colour publisher, HarperCollins Children’s, from Susan Brandt, the president and c.e.o. of Dr Seuss Enterprises. Publication will be supported by a "major" marketing and publicity campaign, while full-colour illustrations will be rendered in the the original style of the 1957 title.
The new story begins one year after the Grinch stole Christmas from Who-ville.
The synopsis reads: "Eager to prove to the Whos that his heart has grown to love the holiday, the Grinch devises a plan to win Who-ville’s Christmas Crown by making the largest, most spectacular Christmas tree the Whos have ever seen! When things don’t go as planned, the Grinch’s heart turns ice-cold, and he threatens to leave Who-ville for good… until one small, special Who reminds him that Christmas is not about winning.”
Brandt said: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of the most beloved holiday celebration books of all time. Adding to that legacy with a sequel is a process we have carefully considered, and we love what the author and illustrator have created. We feel it will be yet another heartwarming piece of Seussian literature that will help families around the world grow their hearts three more sizes as they celebrate the holidays for decades to come.”
Matthews added: “The Grinch is a Christmas icon for families worldwide and the original classic title is a perennial best-seller, so we are thrilled that the magic of Grinchmas now continues with this sequel How the Grinch Lost Christmas where we find out what happened to the Grinch after he stole Christmas. This new and exciting addition to the Dr Seuss canon of publishing will be the highlight of our seasoning offering in 2023”.
