HarperCollins has acquired the first book from England women’s national football team head coach Sarina Wiegman, which will track the Lionesses boss’ “extraordinary journey to becoming one of sport’s most inspirational figures”.
HarperNonFiction publishing director Rose Sandy acquired world all-language rights from Lienke van Santvoort and Pauline Siemers at Sparkling Orange Netherlands. Publisher Erwin Koning will oversee HarperCollins Holland’s publication and it will be co-written with Jeroen Visscher.
Wiegman said: “Football teaches us about teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of pushing ourselves to be the best we can be. In my book, I hope to share my love for the game, and the impact it has had on my life both on and off the field."
Wiegman led England’s Lionesses to victory on home soil at the 2022 Euros, winning the country’s first major football title since the men’s World Cup victory in 1966. Widely regarded as a one of the greatest international coaches, the Hague-born Wiegman had previously managed the Netherlands to 2017 Euros glory and last year was named best women’s coach at the FIFA Awards.
Ahead of the currently untitled book’s autumn 2023 release, Wiegman will be coaching the Lionesses in this summer’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. England are joint-favourites to win the tournament with two-time defending champions the United States.
Sandy said that Wiegman’s book "not only tells the inspiring story of one of the most successful female football managers in the world, but also provides invaluable insights into leadership, innovation and change. I am always on the look-out for stories that inspire and empower readers. Sarina’s book will do exactly that".
Koning added: “What Sarina has done for the teams in both the Netherlands and the UK is beyond impressive, and I think this book will appeal to a lot of people who are curious about the key to her success in both countries. Combining this with her strong message of inclusion and female leadership guarantees a book that will be a bestseller in the making.”
