HarperNonFiction has snapped up investigative journalist Maureen Callahan’s "explosive" exploration of the "Kennedy legacy of physical and psychological abuse".
Publishing director Joel Simons acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed from Rachel Clements at Abner Stein, and the book will be published on Mudlark on 4th July in hardback, e-book and audiobook.
"For decades, the Kennedy name has been synonymous with wealth, power and – above all else – integrity," the synopsis says. "But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the Kennedy legacy of physical and psychological abuse of women that spans generations, and has ruined untold lives. In Ask Not, bestselling journalist Maureen Callahan reveals yet-unknown details of abuse, uncovering some of the Kennedys’ hidden history of exploitation and laying bare the family’s rampant misogyny."
Callahan said: "Legends such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Marilyn Monroe to lesser-known girls and women have suffered under the Camelot myth – a dangerous, stubborn lie that’s helping RFK Jr, a man whose cheating in his second marriage was likely a factor which drove his second wife to suicide, to mount a serious run for US president. Ask Not is a fiery, dangerous book meant to set this myth aflame."
Simons added: "Ask Not is an utterly propulsive work of popular history, with 13 fascinating women at its heart; but it’s also a book that stands up against institutional and patriarchal power in the fiercest way possible. Whether an ardent Kennedy watcher or someone new to the political dynasty, there’s something here for every kind of reader, and I can’t wait to publish Maureen’s brilliant book on Mudlark this summer."
