HarperCollins has scooped four new novels from Cara Hunter, including two books in the DI Adam Fawley series, plus two standalone novels.
Phoebe Morgan, editorial director at HarperFiction, bought world English-language rights from Anna Power at Johnson and Alcock. The first standalone novel, The Fall, will be out in spring 2023. Rachel Kahan will co-publish with William Morrow in the US. Morrow will also publish four of Hunter’s backlist Fawley titles in the US. Hunter previously published her DI Fawley franchise with Viking.
The Fall will focus on the cast of a true-crime TV show—and one of their number is the real killer.
Morgan said: "I have been a huge Cara Hunter fan since day one and firmly believe she is one of the most talented crime writers in the market today. Her fast-paced, intricately plotted books with their trademark creative style put the reader in the position of detective, and I feel very privileged to be launching her standalone career as well as picking up the reins on her amazing series, taking our publishing with her to 2026. It’s not often you get to publish one of your all-time favourite writers so this partnership really is a dream come true. Everyone at HarperFiction was blown away by Cara’s standalone idea."
Hunter added: "This is going to be the most amazing new chapter for me. I’m incredibly grateful to my team at Viking for all they have done to establish the Fawley series, and I’m looking forward to seeing where HarperCollins will take it—they have such a fantastic track record in crime. As my readers know, I’ve been wanting to do a standalone for a while, so that aspect of the deal is really exciting. I genuinely can’t wait to get started."
Kahan commented: "It’s a real privilege to bring Cara Hunter’s work to American readers. We look forward to delighting fans on this side of the Atlantic with her intricate and riveting novels."
