HarperCollins Children’s Books has signed the official film tie-in book for StudioCanal’s upcoming film "The Railway Children Return", written by author Linda Chapman.
Colour publisher Juliet Matthews acquired world rights from Massimo Moretti at the film production company. It will be published in paperback and feature stills from the film on the cover.
The deal marks the latest collaboration between HarperCollins Children’s and StudioCanal; they previously collaborated on the Paddington movies and "The Secret Garden".
The film, featuring Sheridan Smith, Jenny Agutter and Tom Courtenay, will be released in UK cinemas on 15th July 2022, while the book will follow at an as-yet-undisclosed date.
Previous children’s titles by author Chapman include My Secret Unicorn (Penguin), Stardust (Puffin), Not Quite a Mermaid (Puffin) and Genie-Us (Red Fox).
Inspired by the Lionel Jeffries film “The Railway Children” and the characters created by E Nesbit, this latest adaptation will be directed by Morgan Matthews and tells the story of an injured American soldier, Abe, who is discovered by the children hiding out in a railyard. Thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home, the film promises to be “an enchanting, moving and heart-warming adventure for a new generation”.
Matthews said: “We are delighted to be bringing this follow-up story to new and existing fans. The exciting new story features familiar characters, a stunning setting and the all-important majestic trains, bringing a fresh and timely relevance for readers and film fans today.”
StudioCanal UK c.e.o. Alex Hamilton added: "We’re thrilled that HarperCollins will be publishing the film tie-in book worldwide. We’re excited for audiences to see our follow-up to Lionel Jeffries’ much-loved film and meet a new generation of Railway Children, who will enchant families both on the page and on the big screen."
