HarperNonFiction has secured an "engaging and accessible" introduction to numbers from "Countdown" presenter Rachel Riley.
Editor Holly Blood negotiated the deal for world all language rights to At Sixes and Sevens with Chloe Gott at KBJ Management. The book will publish on 28th October 2021.
The publisher said: "Last year brought about its own unique challenges when the pandemic hit, but one which has stuck with us is home schooling – and in the process, millions of parents have suddenly found themselves having to teach subjects they haven’t thought about in years, including one considered the trickiest of them all: maths. In At Sixes and Sevens, maths expert Rachel Riley presents an engaging and accessible introduction into how numbers work and why we shouldn’t be afraid of them. This brilliant and well-rounded guide will take you back to the very basics, allowing you to revisit what you learnt at school, build your understanding of maths from the get-go and provide you with the essential toolkit to gain confidence in your numerical abilities. Packed full of working examples, foolproof methods, quirky trivia and puzzles to try, as well as easy-to-learn tips and tricks, At Sixes and Sevens is a must-read for anyone and everyone who ever thought maths was ‘above’ them."
Riley said: "I've really enjoyed writing what I hope will be a useful, encouraging and undaunting guide for parents and adults in need of a helping hand getting to grips with maths. I hope it will help to instil maths positivity and a sense of fun and context into a subject that may have been confusing, boring, or both at school! There are far more mentions of cocktails, football and even codpieces than I remember in my old textbooks, and tips on how to win internet maths arguments! Whatever the reason for wanting to improve your numeracy, this book will definitely assist!"
Blood added: "It's been an absolute delight working with Rachel on this incredibly timely and much-needed book. There are very few people who can take a (sometimes scary and overwhelming!) subject like maths and make it as thoroughly entertaining and accessible as she has. At Sixes and Sevens is funny, engaging and, most of all, wildly useful—you'll find yourself empowered to tackle things you never thought you'd be capable of! I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it."
