HarperVoyager has scooped two more books by Sue Lynn Tan, bestselling author of fantasy Daughter of the Moon Goddess, including one novel set in the same Celestial world as Tan’s breakout debut.
Vicky Leech Mateos, commissioning editor, and David Pomerico, US executive editor, acquired world rights for the two-book deal with Naomi Davis at BookEnds Literary Agency. The new books, as yet untitled, will publish from summer 2023.
Tan’s debut was inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm. Both new titles will be fantasy rooted in a non-western canon and continue to reimagine classic myth and folklore: as well as a new story set in the same world as the Celestial Kingdom duology, the new acquisition deal includes one standalone fantasy novel which reimagines the beloved Chinese Legend of the White Snake.
Tan said: “I am honoured to be a part of the HarperVoyager family and thrilled to continue working with Vicky and her amazing team in the UK. It’s been a wonderful journey with Daughter of the Moon Goddess, hearing from readers around the world, and I never imagined such beautiful editions. I’m excited to share these new stories with readers.”
Davis added: “Sue Lynn Tan’s lush worlds and magnificent storytelling are a literary agent’s dream and I am so thrilled she has found her perfect-match publishing home in HarperVoyager US and UK. After the explosive release of Daughter of the Moon Goddess, I’m delighted Voyager will be publishing two new stories. Readers around the globe eagerly await the sequel, and soon they’ll not only get to devour the third story in the Celestial Kingdom but also join the author in a new fantasy adventure with her fourth book. We couldn’t ask for better publishing partners than Vicky and David and HarperVoyager.”
Leech Mateos said: “It has been a joy to publish Sue Lynn’s debut to such success. Her characters and worlds are rendered so lyrically, her stories so adventurous and romantic and thrilling—it is no surprise that her fans already love her writing to the moon and back. I am so excited to be adding more books to the list by this bright new leading voice in fantasy.”
