HarperCollins Children’s Books has revealed David Walliams’ new book Spaceboy, which will publish this autumn.
The book will be the first novel illustrated by Adam Stower, who has previously collaborated with Walliams on The World’s Worst Pets, which is currently in its ninth week at the top of the children’s charts, and the two most recent picture books, Little Monsters (2020) and Marmalade (2022).
Spaceboy is set in America in the early 1960s and will publish on 29th September. The synopsis says: “On a dusty old farm in the mid-west, Ruth spends every night looking at the stars through her telescope, dreaming of a more exciting life.
“But when a UFO crash-lands in the cornfield, she finds herself launched into a thrilling adventure – one that will take Ruth further than she could have ever imagined…”
The publication will be supported by a “supersonic” marketing and PR campaign to include national outdoor and radio advertising, digital content, events, high-profile media appearances and schools outreach.
Nick Lake, fiction publisher, said: “We are so proud to be launching David Walliams’ spectacularly entertaining Spaceboy this autumn. This is an inspiring, hilarious and literally uplifting space race adventure from a born storyteller, rocket-fuelled by imagination and lavishly illustrated by the multi-talented Adam Stower. It’s a book about reaching for — and maybe even reaching — the stars, and will take millions of readers on the journey of a lifetime.”
Walliams added: “As a boy I was fascinated with outer space. I devoured all science fiction books, TV shows and films. So this comedy adventure, set during the space race of the 1960s, was an absolute joy to write and took me back to my own childhood.”
Stower also commented: “Spaceboy is packed with mystery, action and hilarious characters — all the things I love illustrating most, so it’s been an absolute treat. And I’m a big vintage sci-fi fan too, so the space race setting is the icing on the cake! Loads of fun!”
Earlier this week HarperCollins reported Walliams has now sold more than 50 million books worldwide.
