HCG signs Andreae and Dyson's festive tale for 2020

Hachette Children’s Group has acquired an "uplifting" tale, about a kind-hearted Christmas monster, from Giraffes Can’t Dance author Giles Andreae with illustrations from Nikki Dyson.

Monster Christmas, a "hilarious and heartwarming" story about acceptance and embracing difference, will publish in hardback on 1st October 2020. The deal was signed by editorial director for Picture Books Frances Elks with Jodie Hodges at United Agents for Andreae and Kate Johnson at Advocate Art Agency for Dyson.

"When Santa needs a break, Monster Christmas kindly steps in," reads the synopsis. "There’s just one problem–everyone’s scared of him! Can Monster Christmas persuade the world to see past his appearance to the kindness within?" 

Elks said she knew the book had "all the hallmarks of a Christmas classic" from the very first reading. "Together, Giles and Nikki have created the most irresistible Christmas monster who’s sure to win the hearts of families everywhere," she said.

Andreae said: "I’m thrilled to be working with Nikki on such an exciting new character. She has brought a real charm, humour and emotional tenderness to the story of this kind-hearted little monster."

Dyson, who has worked on titles including Oscar the Hungry Unicorn series with Lou Carter (HCG), added: “It’s been so much fun working with Giles’ brilliant text for this totally different Christmas story. I can’t wait for everyone to meet our adorable Monster Christmas.”

Andreae, best known for his international bestseller Giraffes Can't Dance, which this year celebrated its 20th anniversary, is also the author of books including Rumble in the Jungle, Commotion in the Ocean and I Love My Mummy (all Orchard Books). He also writes under the noms de plumes of Purple Ronnie and Edward Monkton.
