Head of Zeus has landed Endurance: 100 Tales of Survival, Adventure and Exploration, an anthology of writing edited by Levison Wood.
Commissioning editor Georgina Blackwell acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Jo Cantello at Wolfsong Media. The anthology will be published on 4th August 2022.
“We’re delighted to be collaborating with Head of Zeus for the very first time and for it to involve such a treasure trove of new and classic tales of endurance,” said Cantello. “It feels like the perfect opportunity for Lev to share the remarkable experiences of the explorers and adventurers who inspired him to follow his own adventurous path.”
Wood served as an officer in the Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan before becoming an explorer, author and documentary maker. He is known for undertaking the first expedition to walk the entire length of the Nile and circumnavigating the Arabian penisula from Iraq to Lebanon on foot. Wood’s author credits include Walking the Nile (Simon & Schuster) and Arabia: A Journey Through the Heart of the Middle East (Hodder & Stoughton).
Endurance will showcase 100 extracts of non-fiction and fiction about the most “astonishing acts” of human endurance. It will include insights into the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, pioneering women, record-breaking athletes and survivors of war and torture and include passages by the likes of Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott, Amelia Earhart, Marie Colvin, Solomon Northup, Gertrude Bell and Martin Luther King Jr.
“The scope of this anthology is what makes it particularly interesting,” commented Blackwell. “It takes the reader from the poles to the high seas, from inhospitable jungles and deserts to outer space, and through physical and mental despair to euphoric highs. It’s packed full of you-couldn’t-make-it-up true stories, as well as adventure fiction classics, that will enthral any reader.”
Wood added: “It has been a real privilege to put together this anthology. Each of these books has, at some point or another in my life, taught me a valuable lesson about the enduring nature of the human spirit. The pages of this anthology are filled with stories of people pushing the limits and defying the odds. It will take you on an adventure around the world, but also on an emotional journey exploring what it means to be human.”
