Headline has acquired an “eloquent and thought-provoking" book, The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism, by former Liverpool and England footballer John Barnes.
Consultant sports publisher Jonathan Taylor acquired world rights direct from the author. The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism is out in hardback, e-book and audio on 14th October 2021.
Barnes was born in Jamaica amd moved with his family to the UK at the age of 12. As a professional footballer, he spent six years at Watford followed by a decade at Liverpool, where he won two league titles and two FA Cups. He was awarded 79 caps for England, scored 11 goals, played at Italia 90, and in 1984 scored what is often called England's greatest individual goal, against Brazil in Rio.
Taylor said: “When John Barnes told me he was already writing a book about prejudice and discrimination I got a chill of excitement. He is an incredibly passionate, eloquent, confident and well-read thinker and commentator on these issues and he writes with refreshing accessibility and great authority. Headline published his autobiography in 1999, and it is a real privilege for us to continue that relationship this year.”
Barnes said: “I’m delighted to be working on my new project with Headline after all these years. This will be a very different book from last time, but one which I feel is much more necessary in the current climate, something with the objective of helping to tackle discrimination in all its forms.”
