Headline Press has signed Economica: A Global History of Women, Wealth and Power by historian Victoria Bateman.
Publisher Martin Redfern acquired world all-language rights directly from the author for publication in August 2025. Seal Press will publish the book in the US.
Economica "presents a fresh perspective on the role of women in economic life from the dawn of history to the present day". Bateman brings to life the stories of "exceptional female entrepreneurs and ordinary women workers" all over the world.
Headline Press added: "Covering the key economic milestones of the past 12 millennia – from the birth of farming and the transition from feudalism to capitalism, to the industrial revolution and the advent of computing – Economica restores women to their rightful place in the economic history of the world."
Bateman commented: "I am delighted that Headline Press has given me the opportunity to write a new economic history of the world that – for the first time – properly recognises the contributions of women. The finished book isn’t simply an economic history of the world told through the eyes of women, it is a more accurate economic history of us all."
Redfern added: "Economica is a major new work of popular history. Victoria has a remarkable ability to bring the past to life on the page, and her character-rich narrative challenges many of our assumptions about the role of women in the global economy throughout the course of human history. The book is an important international priority for the new Headline Press list."
Bateman has taught at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, including as the director of studies in economics and lecturer in economic history.
