Headline Review has scooped The Drownings, a "dark and propulsive" campus novel by Hazel Barkworth.
Frankie Edwards, editorial director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Lucy Morris at Curtis Brown. The novel will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook in August 2024.
With "witchy undercurrents", The Drowning follows protagonist Serena who begins studying at a prestigious English university after an injury ended her swimming career. The synopsis continues: "Her life changes when she meets Jane, an enigmatic tutor obsessed with historic witch trials that took place in the local waters. This is a place that has always been dangerous for women. What follows is a gripping story of female rage, revenge and coming of age."
Edwards commented: "In The Drownings, Hazel Barkworth brings her characteristically provocative yet empathetic eye to all the irresistible hallmarks of a gripping campus novel – atmospheric academic setting, dynamics of power and rivalry, intense youthful obsessions and the dark side of female friendship – combined with a fresh, contemporary take on themes of protest and manifestation. The novel bristles with tension; I found it impossible to put down."
Barkworth’s debut novel Heatstroke was also published by Headline in 2020. Barkworth said: "I couldn’t be more delighted to be working with Frankie and the fantastic team at Headline again. It is an utter privilege to benefit from Frankie’s incisive, perceptive brilliance. Working with her to delve into the shadows of campus life, and dredge up the passions, power and fury that lie there, has been a rewarding joy."
