Héloïse Press has secured Industrial Roots, a novel by Lisa Pike, the publisher’s first English title.
Founder and publisher Aina Marti-Balcells acquired world all language rights directly from the author. The book will be published on 28th February 2023.
Pike is the author of the novel My Grandmother’s Pill (Guernica Editions) and a poetry collection. Her writings have also appeared in The New Quarterly and the collection Re: Generations: Canadian Women Poets in Conversation (Black Moss Press), edited by Barbara Godard.
Industrial Roots is an "exceptional collection of domestic vignettes" by different female characters primarily among the members of one family living in Ontario. The publisher wrote: "A woman that feels an urge to steal babies, an alcoholic husband, sisters in love with the same man, ageing parents, absent fathers—all have a place in the stories these women tell."
Marti-Balcells commented: "Industrial Roots brings together the oral tradition of storytelling and a highly sophisticated narrative structure. Lisa Pike challenges definitions of plot, genre and representation."
