The History Press will publish Lady Sidekick: 50 Tired Tropes for Women by Anneka Harry in October 2020. The book is illustrated by Laura Dockrill.
Publishing director Laura Perehinec acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Laura Macdougall at United Agents. Audio rights were sold separately to Laura Smith at WF Howes.
Lady Sidekick: 50 Tired Tropes for Women comes as a result of Harry's frustration will the roles of women in the mainstream media. The book looks at 50 of the "most tedious" female character tropes, such as the "Cat Lady" or "Sassy Black Woman". The book is pegged as a "fierce, funny, feminist takedown" by the publisher.
The author works as a comedy actor and has recently published Gender Rebels (Little A, 2020). On her latest book she commented: "Although we are slowly being treated to more female characters with brain cells (and fewer who are walking boobs), true representation in our media and popular culture is a hot mess. I reckon that we’ll never overcome it, until we can laugh about it... Lady Sidekick has been bursting out of me for a long time. I feel very proud to be working with The History Press and this team of damsels without hint of distress!"
Perehinec added: "I’m over the moon to working with Anneka on this. Her sharp wit and keen eye for satire, alongside Laura’s brilliant illustrations, bring a whole new dimension to a topic that we really shouldn’t still be talking about."
