Hodder & Stoughton has snapped up Roshani Chokshi’s adult debut The Last Tale of the Flower Bride in a two-book deal.
Senior commissioning editor Molly Powell bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, at auction from Anna Carmichael at Abner Stein, acting on behalf of Thao Le at the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. William Morrow executive editor Jessica Williams negotiated the deal for North American rights. The Last Tale of the Flower Bride will be published in spring 2023.
Chokshi’s previous author credits include books for middle-grade and young adult readers. Her upcoming adult debut is a “fairytale laden” gothic story about a marriage that slowly unravels as a husband picks at the threads of a dangerous secret his wife is keeping.
Powell said: “Despite being a long-time lover of Roshani’s novels, I was still blown away by The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. In this tense, powerful, and sumptuous story, Roshani has written something wholly beguiling, an ode to the hidden truths at the heart of fairytales, to our darkest shadows and brightest lights, and to the dangerous secrets we keep from the ones we love the most. Full of twists and turns, I couldn’t put it down – and I can’t wait to give UK readers equally sleepless nights.”
“I am ecstatic to be working with the wonderful team at Hodder. From the very beginning, Hodder understood that The Last Tale of The Flower Bride is not just a gothic love letter to fairytales, but also a love letter to self-discovery,” Chokshi added. “Fairytales are so often dark, surreal, random and monstrous. But they are hopeful, too. They show us that the world and most importantly ourselves can hold more than dark corners. For all our shadows, we are equally vessels of wonder. I dearly hope readers feel the same, and I am so delighted that this story will be in such wonderful hands.”
