Hodder & Stoughton has acquired The Last Line, a "thrilling" debut novel by Stephen Ronson set during the tense days of May 1940, as Nazi forces swept across France and England braced for invasion.
Editor Morgan Springett acquired British Commonwealth rights, including Canada, from Jordan Lees at The Blair Partnership in a two-book deal. The first in the new John Cook series is slated for publication in autumn 2023.
The Last Line follows John Cook, a war veteran tasked with preparing the resistance effort in rural Sussex. But even as the foreign threat looms, Cook becomes embroiled in the search for a missing child and uncovers a dark conspiracy that reaches to the highest ranks of society.
Springett said: “‘We’re incredibly excited to add Stephen Ronson’s debut novel to our publishing roster. The Last Line is a standout debut, with a gripping story and expertly crafted characters. We can’t wait to share it with readers.
“Stephen Ronson is a talented new voice in the world of fiction, with a passion for crafting compelling stories set against historical events. The Last Line marks his debut as a published author, and Hodder is confident that he will continue to captivate audiences with his writing in the years to come."
Ronson said: “I’m thrilled to be working with Hodder. Taking my place in their line-up alongside so many of my all-time favourite authors is a dream come true. Working with Jordan and Morgan has been a great collaboration. Right from the start it was clear we shared a very complementary vision, and I am sure this will be a long-running partnership.”
