Hodder & Stoughton has signed two books from spoken word artist George Mpanga, otherwise known as George the Poet.
Editor Cameron Myers acquired world English rights in both titles from Charlie Brotherstone at Brotherstone Creative Management. Have You Read George’s Podcast? will be published on 21st July 2022. Hodder & Stoughton also won UK & Commonwealth rights for Mpanga’s new autobiographical work to be published in autumn 2023.
Have You Read George’s Podcast? will feature the complete scripts of the podcast "Have You Heard George’s Podcast?" alongside new writing. Like the award-winning podcast, the book will deliver a fresh and illuminating take on politics, social observation, history and current affairs through storytelling, speculative fiction and spoken word.
It began in 2018 to great success. His first "chapter" went on to win five awards at the 2019 British Podcast Awards, including Podcast of the Year. Chapter Two bagged the Peabody Award, breaking records as the first non-US podcast to do so.
An audiobook edition will also be released alongside Mpanga’s second book.
Myers said: “George the Poet is one of the most exciting social commentators and forward-thinking creatives of our generation. I’m delighted to be working with him to bring his unique and incisive take on life, politics and the arts to the world.”
Mpanga added: “It’s a privilege to be able to make my podcast available in book format. I’m excited about it being available to read in schools, in prisons and across the world where more people have access to my words and can see what I was trying to say with fresh perspective.”
